Every once in a great while a band emerges from Milwaukee with a sound so unique, they inevitably become a national favorite. (Think Violent Femmes, Willy Porter, the BoDeans.) The Bystanders, formed in 2003 with some of the area’s top musicians, hope to follow in the footsteps of these top-flight, national acts. With her amazing voice and high-energy stage presence, new lead singer, Carmen Nickerson (formerly of the Eddie Butts Band), quickly gets an audience into the palm of her hands and never lets go.

The Bystanders combine catchy originals (Oh Jesus, Don’t Forget) with crowd-pleasing covers from artists such as Alanis, Cold Play and Fleetwood Mac, to create an unbeatable set list. Thanks to the advanced arrangements brought to their covers (compliments of Russian composer and band member, Kostia), the Bystanders take the songs you know to melodic places you wouldn’t expect-especially from a local act.

The Bystanders first CD was titled It’s Life. It was mixed at the renowned Cherokee studios in Los Angeles and featured special guest performances by guitar legends Daryl Stuermer and Greg Koch. Recently, the group enlisted the services of Willy Porter to produce new material, scheduled for release later this year.

Carmen Nickerson, Lead Vocals – After making a name for herself on the Los Angeles music scene, this soulful singer/songwriter became vocalist for The Eddie Butts Band, one of Wisconsin’s most successful acts. Carmen joined the Bystanders in March of 2006.

Michael Henszey, Vocals & Rhythm Guitar – As the former owner of AD Studios, Michael learned from some of the best in the business, including artists such as Cheap Trick and Jerry Harrison. Michael has established a reputation as a powerful singer/songwriter.

Kostia, Keyboards – Trained as a concert pianist in Russia, Kostia came to America to record with Narada Records. When he’s not playing with the Bystanders, Kostia tours as a solo artist as well as with the Daryl Stuermer band.

Steve Kleiber, Bass – This professional has performed on national and international tours with the Willy Porter Band, Samy Lanis and Keedy.

Brad Eggers, Drums – Not many musicians turn pro as teenagers. Brad accomplished this goal and many others during his 20-year career. During this time he’s worked with countless groups and has become a well-respected drummer.

Joe Gorman, Lead Guitar – Joe’s lead guitar skills have led him to opportunities with many well-known local bands, such as Street Life, Millennium and Lake Effect. Along with being a professional guitar player, Joe makes his living as a full-time jingle composer.
